Pet life expectancy calculator
How long do pets live? Pick your pet — and its size or breed where it matters — for a typical lifespan range based on published UK studies, plus life-stage milestones and genuine tips to help them live a long, healthy life.
Typical averages from published UK studies (VetCompass, PDSA, RSPCA, Cats Protection, RWAF) — individual pets vary widely with genetics, care and luck. Good food, healthy weight, dental care and regular vet checks all help.
Where these figures come from
The lifespan ranges shown are typical averages drawn from established UK sources, not guarantees for any individual pet:
- Dogs: the 2024 VetCompass / RVC UK companion-dog life-table study and Kennel Club breed data. Smaller breeds generally live longest; giant and flat-faced (brachycephalic) breeds tend to have shorter lives.
- Cats: VetCompass cat life tables and Cats Protection. Cats kept safely indoors typically live longer than those with outdoor access.
- Rabbits: the Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund (RWAF) and PDSA — well-cared-for rabbits commonly reach 8–12 years.
- Small pets: RSPCA and PDSA care guides for guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, rats, ferrets and more.
These are population averages. Your own pet’s lifespan depends on genetics, neutering, diet, body weight, environment and a fair bit of luck. Your vet is the best source of advice for your individual pet.
