Rabbit Runs

Rabbits need to run, dig and binky every single day — and a hutch can’t provide that. A secure run is the other half of a proper rabbit home, giving them safe access to grass and space to actually move.

Why a run isn’t optional

A rabbit confined to a hutch develops health and behaviour problems — obesity, boredom and even bone weakness from lack of movement. Welfare guidance treats the run as part of the minimum enclosure, not an add-on, with constant or near-constant access throughout the day.

Aim for a run that, combined with the hutch, gives that 3m × 2m of total space, tall enough for a rabbit to stand up fully on its back legs.

Keeping it predator-proof

Foxes, cats and birds of prey are real threats, so a run needs a fully enclosed roof, not just sides. Choose strong weld-mesh rather than flimsy chicken wire, and either a solid floor or a skirt of mesh pegged around the base to stop both rabbits digging out and predators digging in.

A partly-covered section gives shade and shelter from rain, and a hide inside lets a startled rabbit feel safe. Move a bottomless grass run regularly so they always have fresh, un-fouled grazing.

Everything here is chosen to be genuinely useful in everyday life with your pet — quality-checked, fairly priced and shipped tracked across the UK. For any health concern, your vet is always the best first port of call.

Common questions

How much exercise time does a rabbit need?

As much as possible — ideally constant access to a run, or several hours a day at minimum. Rabbits are crepuscular, so dawn and dusk are their most active times.

How do I make a rabbit run fox-proof?

Use a fully roofed run in strong weld-mesh, with either a solid floor or mesh skirting pegged around the base so nothing can dig under. Avoid thin chicken wire, which a determined fox can tear.

Can guinea pigs use a rabbit run?

Yes, a secure run suits guinea pigs too — just check the mesh gaps are small enough that they can’t squeeze out, and provide plenty of shade, as they’re sensitive to heat.
