Heated Pet Beds

A little gentle warmth can be the difference between a stiff senior pet shuffling about and one curled up content — heated beds take the chill out of cold floors and easy aching joints.

Who really benefits from warmth

Warmth eases muscles and joints, which is why heated beds are such a help for arthritic and elderly pets — the same soothing effect a warm compress has on us. They’re equally welcome for thin-coated and small breeds like greyhounds, whippets, chihuahuas and sphynx cats, and for any pet recovering from illness or surgery in a chilly home.

There are two routes to warmth. Self-warming beds use a reflective layer to bounce a pet’s own body heat back at them — no power, no cables, completely safe to leave unattended. Electric beds give a steady low heat regardless of the pet’s own warmth and suit very cold rooms, outbuildings or pets that struggle to generate their own.

Using electric beds safely

If you choose an electric bed, buy one made specifically for pets with a chew-resistant or steel-wrapped cable, a low, regulated temperature and ideally a thermostat that warms to body temperature rather than getting hot. Never use a human electric blanket for a pet, and route the cable out of reach of inquisitive teeth.

Always give your pet room to move off the heat. A heated bed should be one warm option in a normal-temperature space, not the only place to lie, so they can self-regulate if they get too warm. Check the bed isn’t hot to the touch, unplug it when you’re away for long periods unless it’s rated for unattended use, and keep electric pads dry.

Everything here is chosen to be genuinely useful in everyday life with your pet — quality-checked, fairly priced and shipped tracked across the UK. For any health concern, your vet is always the best first port of call.

Common questions

Is a self-warming or electric bed better?

Self-warming beds are the safest, cable-free choice for most pets and rooms with normal heating. Electric beds suit very cold spaces, outbuildings, or frail pets that can’t hold their own warmth — just buy a pet-specific model.

Are heated beds safe to leave on?

Self-warming beds are completely safe unattended. For electric beds, only leave one running if it’s a regulated, low-temperature pet model rated for unattended use, and always give your pet space to move off the heat.

Will a heated bed help my arthritic cat or dog?

Gentle warmth soothes stiff joints and muscles and many older pets settle far more comfortably on one, especially in winter. It supports rather than replaces veterinary care, so keep up any prescribed pain management too.
