Choosing a safe substrate
Paper-based beddings are the safe, modern default — soft, highly absorbent and low in dust. The materials to avoid are pine and cedar shavings, whose aromatic oils can irritate a hamster’s sensitive airways over time. Steer clear of fluffy synthetic "cotton wool" nesting too, as the fibres can wrap around limbs or be swallowed.
Dust is the quiet culprit behind a lot of small-pet respiratory trouble, so a bedding labelled dust-extracted or dust-free is worth paying a little more for. Hamsters keep their own toileting tidy if you let them, so an unscented, additive-free substrate avoids overwhelming a nose that is many times more sensitive than ours.
Depth, burrowing & keeping it clean
Depth is the upgrade most owners overlook. Hamsters are natural burrowers and thrive with a generous layer they can tunnel through — many keepers fill to a good 15–20cm or more so burrows hold their shape. A deep, diggable substrate does more for a hamster’s wellbeing than almost any toy you can buy.
Rather than stripping the whole cage weekly, spot-clean daily: scoop the wet toilet corner and any soiled patches, top up fresh bedding, and leave the rest. Hamsters scent-mark their territory, so a full deep-clean every few weeks — keeping a little old bedding to mix back in — is far less stressful than wiping the slate clean each time.
