Dog Cooling Vests

Dogs can’t sweat to cool down — they rely on panting, which struggles in the heat. A cooling vest uses evaporation to draw heat off the body, buying a heat-sensitive dog real relief on a warm day.

How a cooling vest works

You soak the vest in cold water, wring it out and put it on. As the water evaporates it pulls heat away from the dog’s body — the same principle as sweat, which dogs can’t do. It typically stays effective for a few hours before needing a re-wet.

It’s most useful for the dogs that overheat fastest: flat-faced (brachycephalic) breeds like Pugs and Bulldogs, dark or thick-coated dogs, seniors, and any dog being active in warm weather.

Cooling vests are one part of heat safety

A vest helps, but it doesn’t make heat safe on its own. Walk in the cool of early morning or late evening, carry water, rest in shade, and never leave a dog in a car. Learn the signs of heatstroke — heavy panting, drooling, bright-red gums, wobbliness — and act fast if you see them.

Pair a vest with a cooling mat at home for the hottest days, and re-wet the vet regularly to keep it working.

Everything here is chosen to be genuinely useful in everyday life with your pet — quality-checked, fairly priced and shipped tracked across the UK. For any health concern, your vet is always the best first port of call.

Common questions

Do dog cooling vests actually work?

Yes — by wetting them and letting the water evaporate, they draw heat off the body for a few hours. They’re a genuine help for heat-sensitive dogs, but work best alongside shade, water and avoiding the hottest part of the day.

Which dogs need a cooling vest most?

Flat-faced breeds like Pugs and Bulldogs, dark or thick-coated dogs, seniors and overweight dogs all overheat quickly and benefit most. So does any dog active in warm weather.

How often do I re-wet a cooling vest?

Roughly every couple of hours, or whenever it feels dry to the touch — once the water has evaporated it stops cooling. Carry a bottle to re-wet it on longer outings.
